History
The Research Center for Educational Technology (RCET) is located in the Moulton Hall Learning Technology Building. Its mission is to explore the uses and influences of technology in education to help improve teaching and learning in today’s classrooms and inform the development of ubiquitous computing environments of the future. To carry out this mission, we have established a network that links 14 universities and 45 university researchers, and a unique laboratory classroom to which we bring intact K-12 classes every day, for six weeks at a time. Since its opening in 1998, over 2,100 K-12 students and over 90 teachers have participated in the Ameritech, then SBC and now named AT&T Classroom. The Classroom has also served as a field site for over 490 EHHS pre-service teachers including student teaching, in classroom observations and virtually through connections to 18 classrooms in White Hall.
Research in the classroom has made RCET a world leader in the ubiquitous computing field. Evidence of this role includes numerous publications, and presentations, two CD’s, 12 handheld and ubiquitous computing grant awards, a DVD, and a major book.
RCET ‘s success is largely due to the viability of its partnerships; from joint faculty research projects, within and outside of EHHS, to those formed with other universities, K-12 schools and funding agencies. RCET is clearly a success story for EHHS and the University as a whole.
