Mobile Learning

Mobile Technologies and Learning

RCET researchers have engaged in various research projects related to the use of mobile technologies for teaching and learning over the past five years, exploring the ways in which mobile devices expand opportunities for learning across space and time, engage students at all levels, and allow for individualized and customized learning experiences. An important strand of RCET’s research on mobile technologies involves generalizing from research in this area to inform theory, practice, and policy worldwide. Additional work includes action research studies undertaken in collaboration with classroom teachers are designed to measure the impact of the use of handheld computers on teaching and learning. Results support the efficacy of the use of handheld technologies to increase students’ motivation, engagement, concept understanding of concepts, and problem solving skills. Work related to the Dana project (2003-2004) and PEP project (2001-2002) are listed in separate sections at the bottom of this page.

Dana Project (2003 - 2004)

This project investigated how mobile technology use (in this case AlphaSmart®  Danas TM) affected the academic progress, motivation to learn, self-efficacy, and conceptual understanding of K-12 students, especially those with special needs, and whether a device like the DanaTM could help close the gap between regular and special needs students. Findings indicate that they can.  They also highlight the personalization of learning and increases in the quality and quantity of student work due to increased motivation resulting from handheld use.

Palm Education Pioneers (PEP) Project (2001 - 2003)

RCET served as one of nine research hubs across the country investigating the impact of handheld computers on teaching and learning, what educational activities handhelds made possible, what was still missing in the technology, and how handhelds can be most effectively integrated in the classroom. One of the outcomes of this project was a CD-ROM of which 5,000 copies were distributed. Initial findings were mostly positive, with the recommendation that hardware and software be more specifically geared toward education.
